Route briefing How a mobile mechanic reaches you in Norfolk
  1. Norfolk sits on a peninsula wrapped by the Elizabeth River, the Lafayette River and the Chesapeake Bay, and water shapes nearly every trip. I-64 crosses the city's north side, linking the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to the Peninsula with Chesapeake and Virginia Beach to the south and east. I-264 runs from the Downtown Tunnel to Portsmouth east through the city toward Virginia Beach, I-464 crosses the river south to Chesapeake, and I-564 runs to Naval Station Norfolk. The Midtown Tunnel provides another crossing to Portsmouth. Hampton Boulevard carries traffic to Old Dominion University and the naval base, and Tidewater Drive and Military Highway are major north-south routes.

  2. For a mobile mechanic, the tunnels and bridges are the bottlenecks. Traffic backs up at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Downtown and Midtown tunnels during rush hour, and a breakdown inside a tunnel is a serious problem that gets towed out quickly. Inside the city, though, most neighborhoods are compact and easy to reach on surface streets, from the old homes of Ghent and Larchmont to the beach cottages of Ocean View and the bungalows of Norview. Many streets in older neighborhoods have no driveways, so curbside repairs are the norm.

  3. Norfolk International Airport sits on the northeast side of the city, and its lots are a common service location. Hampton Roads Transit runs buses, the light rail line from downtown east toward the Virginia Beach line and a passenger ferry to Portsmouth. Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world, dominates the northwest side, and Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University and the medical center near Ghent bring heavy daily traffic.

Around Norfolk, where the car sits

8 areas · pinned
  1. Downtown and Freemason

Office towers, condos and historic rowhouses near the waterfront, with garages and metered parking. Share the garage level and clearance, or meet at a surface lot near the river.

  2. Ghent and the medical center

Historic homes and apartments around Colley Avenue, close to the large hospital and medical school complex. Street parking is tight, and some blocks flood at high tide, so pick higher ground for the repair.

  3. Larchmont and the ODU area

Older neighborhoods along Hampton Boulevard and the Lafayette River near Old Dominion University. Student housing and family homes both make up the work here.

  4. Colonial Place and Riverview

Historic neighborhoods along the Lafayette River with older homes and narrow streets. Tidal flooding affects some streets, so check the forecast before the visit.

  5. Ocean View and East Beach

Beach cottages and newer homes along the Chesapeake Bay on the city's north shore. Salt air and sand reach cars here quickly, so terminals and brakes corrode faster. Beach parking fills on summer weekends.

  6. Naval Station Norfolk area

Military housing, apartments and neighborhoods near the base gates on the northwest side. Off-base homes are easy to reach; access to the installation depends on base rules.

  7. Norview and Wards Corner

Mid-century neighborhoods and shopping areas near the airport and I-64. Driveways and roomy lots make on-site work straightforward. Airport traffic is light outside of travel peaks.

  8. Norfolk State and the east side

The Norfolk State University campus and surrounding neighborhoods near the light rail line. Campus lots and nearby streets work for quick repairs like batteries and brakes.

What the water does to a Norfolk car

Field report · 3 findings
  1. 01 Finding 1 of 3

Norfolk is one of the most flood-prone cities on the East Coast, and the cause isn't only storms.

High tides regularly push water onto low streets in Ghent, Colonial Place, Larchmont and other neighborhoods, sometimes on sunny days. Cars parked on those streets can end up standing in salt water, and driving through it can soak brakes, wheel bearings and electrical connectors. Checking tide forecasts and parking on higher ground during extreme tides saves a lot of trouble.

  2. 02 Finding 2 of 3

Salt air reaches every part of the city.

Battery terminals corrode, brake calipers and rotors rust, exhaust systems rot from the outside and connectors under the car fail. Summers are long, hot and humid, which shortens battery life and works air conditioning hard. Nor'easters and hurricanes bring wind, rain, surge and long power outages, and the city's old trees drop limbs that crack windshields and dent hoods. Navy families who park near the water at Ocean View or Willoughby see the same corrosion as beachfront cars, and checking terminals and brake hardware twice a year pays off.

  3. 03 Finding 3 of 3

Winters are mild, but the occasional freeze finds weak batteries.

Stop-and-go traffic on I-64 and at the tunnels wears brakes, and older streets in parts of the city are rough on suspensions. Sailors returning from deployment often find cars with dead batteries, flat-spotted tires and stale fuel. Regular underbody rinses, a spring A/C and battery check and a fall brake and corrosion inspection fit the local climate well. Rinsing salt off after any flood or nor'easter matters more here than in almost any other Virginia city.

08 — Questions

Norfolk FAQ

Q.01Can a mobile mechanic come to base housing?

Base housing neighborhoods are usually fine. Access to the installation depends on the base.

Q.02My car sat during a deployment and won't start. Can you help?

Yes. A battery and charging test on-site usually finds the cause.

Q.03Do you serve Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Portsmouth?

Most Norfolk mobile mechanics cover the Southside, including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Portsmouth.

Q.04My car was parked on a street that flooded at high tide. What should be checked?

If water reached the doors or the engine's air intake, don't start it. A mechanic can check the intake, oil and transmission fluid for water, inspect brakes and wheel bearings and test the electrical system where the car sits. Salt water speeds up corrosion, so rinsing the underside soon matters. Document the damage for insurance before moving the car if it went deep.

Q.05Can a mobile mechanic come to the Old Dominion University campus?

In most cases, yes, as long as the lot has a safe, legal place to work. Students and staff often need dead batteries replaced, brakes done or a check-engine light diagnosed. Share the lot or garage, your vehicle details and any permit rules. If campus parking won't allow repairs, a nearby street space or a student apartment lot usually works, depending on parking rules. Mention when your class ends so the timing works.

Q.06My car won't start after I came back from a cruise out of downtown. Can someone help?

Yes. Cars left in downtown garages or lots during a cruise often come back with dead batteries, especially after a hot or cold stretch. Share the garage or lot, the level and your vehicle details. The mechanic can test the battery and charging system, replace a battery that's failed and check for anything else that might cause trouble on the drive home.
