  1. Boston's streets grew out of colonial lanes and filled-in tidal flats, so very little of the city follows a grid. I-93 runs north-south through the middle, underground beneath downtown and out over the Zakim Bridge toward Charlestown and the North Shore, while its southern stretch becomes the Southeast Expressway toward Quincy and the South Shore. I-90, the Mass Pike, comes in from the west through Allston and the Back Bay and ends at the Ted Williams Tunnel to East Boston and Logan. Route 1A and the older harbor tunnels also feed Eastie, US 1 crosses the Tobin Bridge toward Chelsea and Revere, and I-95, still signed Route 128 by most locals, forms the outer ring.

  2. For on-site repair, the neighborhoods matter more than the expressways. The Southeast Expressway and the Pike back up every weekday, and there is rarely a safe place to work on a tunnel approach or an expressway shoulder, so most jobs happen once the car is parked. Storrow Drive and Memorial Drive follow the Charles with low overpasses and limits on commercial vehicles, which is why service vans come in on the Pike, Columbia Road, Blue Hill Avenue and the VFW Parkway rather than the riverside parkways.

  3. Logan International Airport sits across the harbor in East Boston, and its garages and economy lot are a regular service location. The MBTA's Red, Orange, Green and Blue lines and the commuter rail reach most neighborhoods, so plenty of drivers leave the car on their block and ride the T to work while it gets fixed.

    Boston weather swings hard.

    Nor'easters bring heavy wet snow, wind and coastal flooding, and a cold snap after a thaw can freeze slush into ruts on side streets for days. Winter is when batteries quit: one weakened by summer heat finally gives out on the first frigid morning, and cars left on the street during a snow emergency often won't turn over once the plows pass. Starters and alternators get blamed for many of those no-starts, but a load test on the spot usually shows the battery was the real problem.

    Salt and sea air work together here.

    The city and the state put down a lot of road salt, and in the waterfront neighborhoods the harbor adds salty moisture all year. Brake lines, caliper slide pins, exhaust hangers and the undersides of rocker panels rust faster than they would inland, and parking-brake cables seize on cars that live outside. Morrissey Boulevard and other low roads near the water can flood during storms and very high tides, and salt water splashed into wheel wells speeds all of it up.
